I had just clocked ten when my mother decided to offer me a birthday present of my life. All my first birthdays were celebrated in school because my mom, being a single parent, worked away from home as a tour guide. On this specific day, 17th July 2002, my mother woke me up at five in the morning. Since I was the only child at home, it was easy to prepare myself and pack a few clothes as my mom instructed. I recall how eager I was to find out what was going on. The drive to the unknown location took us fifty minutes. There we were, at the airport. I was still clueless the whole time. No, my mother didn’t disclose our final destination until when we touched down.
In less than an hour, the cab was halfway the great city of Newyork to our undisclosed location. From a distance, I could read the words Gramery Tavern. The physical location of Gramery Tavern had the charming ambiance for any event. At the entrance, there was a security person in uniform ready to frisk our suitcases as the cab guy offloaded his car. Approaching fast after the frisking was a petite lady in a red silky knee-length dress. She ushered us to the reception. The receptionist wore a charming smile. There we were, inside the Gramery Tavern restaurant. The aroma from the wooden polished dining room welcomed us warmly. The chairs in the dining room were comfortable. Served for lunch, was the delicious American cuisine. That was the best cuisine I had eaten for a long time. The private rooms in the guest wing were aligned with white cotton bed sheets. The beds were comfortable offering the perfect cushion to our tired bodies.
Our day was almost over when my mother hired a car to drive us to the airport. I was surprised by how energetic mother was given that she had been away from home for almost five months. Our second stop was at the great Charlie Bird restaurant. Customer service was just epic. The walls were decorated with colorful prints which caught my eye given that I love art. The private dining room was large enough for my cake cutting event. From the nicely roast chicken for dinner to ice-cream for dessert, I can confidently say that I had the best 10th birthday.
