The program allows interested entrepreneurs to send in applications and be considered for acceptance in the plan. Some of the ventures are able to get startup capital to boost their ideas. Most of the ventures funded are companies that will create social successes to benefit society.

Sparks used the TV show “Shark Tank” to develop his idea. He felt that “social entrepreneurs” need the same kind of help that business owners do, and that is why he started Spark Tank. He found that there were few places for non-profit ventures to get funding, so he is filling the void.

Participants in the program come before a panel of ten people headed by Spark and pitch their idea. The one chosen as the winner, receives a $5000 grant for their Startup. Marc Sparks believes in giving back to the community and helping others and this is one of the many ways he has decided to get involved.

Spark Tank was started in 2016. In the spring of 2016, fourteen social agencies applied to compete in the first round. Three agencies presented ideas. House of Eli, Metro Dreams and Dog Matters.

The winner was Dog Matters, which provides foster care for pets of addicts who are in treatment programs. There will two more rounds in 2016, and then a final rounds pitting the winners of previous competitions against each other for a final grand prize.
